Not so long ago, I found myself in the middle of a hellacious separation and subsequent divorce. Music is my outlet and with the stereo cranked, I drowned my doubts to the strains of ‘Numb’ and ‘In The End’.
The lyrics in both songs capture the torturous emotions of abuse, something a lot of people can relate to, and that is what has made them so popular. Whether mistreatment at the hands of a significant other, school bullying, or unrealistic parental expectations, the damage is far-reaching and long term. Unfortunately, to try and explain any of that to someone who hasn’t experienced it is like describing color to a blind man.
Linkin Park manages to do just that, and not only gives survivors a means to vent their pain, but also tells others what the results of their actions are.
We need more songs like these; ones that strip down and look at the uglier side of humanity, that make us take a good, hard look at how we treat each other. Fluffy pop songs are fine for mindless entertainment, but they do nothing to address current and important issues. I challenge other bands to do what Linkin Park has done; stop with the “boy-meets-girl, loses-girl” drivel, and find something worth writing about.
